Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Ibadan

The Bachelor of Pharmacy (B. Pharm.) programme commenced at the University of Ibadan in the 1980/81 academic session. The then Department of Pharmacy was based in the Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences and Pharmacy in the College of Medicine under the Headship of Professor D. T. Okpako who was also the substantive Head of the Department of Pharmacology and Therareutics. The Department of Pharmacy was split into two Departments in the 1981/82 session and finally into the following four Departments in the 1982/83 academic session:

  • (i) Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry.
  • (ii) Department of Pharmaceutics and Clinical Pharmacy.
  • (iii) Department of Pharmaceutical Technology and Industrial Pharmacy.
  • (iv) Department of Pharmacognosy.

There were two Visitation Panels from the Pharmacists Board of Nigeria in November 1981 and February 1983 respectively. The Board finally approved the Ibadan programme after the 1983 visitation. The B.Pharm. programme assumed status of a faculty office August 1, 1983 with professor A.A. Olaniyi as the foundation Dean. Professor Olaniyi finished his 2 terms of 2 years each as the Dean in 1987 and was succeeded by Professor D. T. Okpako as the second Dean from 1987 to 1991. The third Dean of the Faculty was Professor K.T. Jaiyeoba from 1991 to 1995.

The B.Pharm. programme had operated two curricula: the 4year curriculum and 5-year curriculum.

The 4-year curriculum was operated from 1980/81 to 1986/87 academic sessions. It awarded a classified B.Pharm. degree. The 5-year declassified B.Pharm. degree curriculum commenced in the 1987/88 session producing its first set of graduands in the 1991/92 academic session.

The 5- year curriculum has been undergoing revision since 1990 at the request of the National Universities Commission (NUC). The newly revised 5- year B.Pharm. curriculum becomes operative from the 1997/98 academic session at the 100 level only. The 200-500 level students will operate the current 5-year curriculum until the 2000/01 academic session. The new curriculum is produced here for the information of staff and students. Please note that Anatomy Physiology. Biochemistry and Pharmacology and Therapeutics are based in the Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences. However, all Lecturers in the Department of Pharmacology and Therapeutics are members of the Faculty Board of Pharmacy. The Faculty of Pharmacy is about to embark on a building project, to house laboratories, lecture theatres, offices, seminar rooms and library. Pharmaceutical Companies, friends of the Faculty and parents to come and help us build an edifice befitting the School of Pharmacy in Nigerian Premier University, the University of Ibadan.
